Skelly Family

The Skelly family begins in Antrim, Ireland in 1710. This was where William Skelly was born. William came to America in 1729 and lived in Philadelphia for a number of years.  He would later move to Bucks County.  William married Mary Ann Lunsford in Pennsylvania and fathered at least 3 children; Phillip, Hugh, and Michael. Phillip undoubtedly met his wife Mary Ann Hastings while in Bucks County. Around 1758, the Skellys moved further west and settled at Elk Gap in Woodcock Valley, which was in Bedford County at the time. Two of William’s sons, Phillip and Hugh, were killed by Indians while on an expedition with Captain William Phillips in 1780.  Phillip and Mary Ann would parent at least 5 children, including William who was born in 1768. Upon reaching adulthood, William moved to Cumberland County, Pennsylvania and married Mary Jane Elizabeth Byerly. They had 6 children, 4 of whom would later settle in Holmes County, Ohio. The eldest son, David, came in the fall of 1836, but it is likely that his siblings moved at the same time. David was a longtime resident of Millersburg, Ohio and would die there in 1860. His daughter Margaret Jane married Cyrus Gurwell.
